We’ve always had a great relationship with the Muslims. And what’s not to love about them? Their architecture is majestic, their pimped-out Honda Activas look very cool, and of course, they know how to keep their women in line. But perhaps their greatest contribution to our country is in the form of their food; more specifically, the humble seekh kebab. We love kebabs. So much so, that the very first food article on this website was a guide to Mohammed Ali Road. Since we didn’t get to go this year because the country decided to self-destruct over a slightly worse common cold, we’ll be revealing our personal favourite kebab stalls so that you too can enjoy the positive side of multiculturalism, however trivial it may be.
Farid seekh Kebab Centre
Farid does one thing, and one thing only; seekh kebabs. And as far as we’re concerned, they do it right. While you do have to share your table, and the men will look at you in disgust when you ask for cutlery, your discomfort will soon fade away when they hand you a plate of their delicious seekh kebabs accompanied by deep fried parathas and some complementary leaves they plucked from a nearby shrub. They may not necessarily be the tastiest kebabs out there, but as far as quality meat goes, you’ll be hard pressed to find anything as economical with as generous portions. Rather impressively they have a really cool grill setup complete with an industrial fan; just make sure you don’t stand downwind if you value your eyebrows.
Hot Seekh, Santacruz
Few kebab stalls in Mumbai could ever compete with Hot Seekh in terms of sheer variety; or taste. It may be relegated to the backwaters of Santacruz market by the powers that be, but it’s certainly worthy of a place on our website, if not SV Road. While every kebab at Hot Seekh is impressive in its own right, the Mutton Seekh Kebabs are in a league of their own. They’re delicious and flavourful, succulent, and juicy, with spices so tantalising they’d almost justify an invasion. While lesser kebabs would crumble at the slightest touch, these have a solid consistency that makes eating them an absolute pleasure.
Nice Fast Food Centre
Nice is exactly what the name says. It’s not phenomenal, nor is it unsatisfactory. And that’s still quite impressive given that it’s little more than metal box bordering two construction sites. All the kebabs at this pride of Santacruz range between above average and just below excellent, and this includes the Mutton Seekh Kebabs. While relatively scrawny and a good bit chewier than its contemporaries, the Mutton Seekh Kebabs at nice have a fair amount of flavour, and a copious amount of grease to match.
